Selecting Internal AuditorsInternal Auditor Training for ISO 9001:2008

The following traits and talents are desirable in an internal auditor, whether for ISO 9001 or other ISO Standards:

  1. Someone who is passionate about the success of the company
  2. Someone who understands the products and/or services well
  3. Someone who is observant, patient and open minded
  4. Someone who can be an active listener and good interviewer
  5. Someone who is convinced that he or she is also providing a service
  6. Someone able to understand a procedure or process and find objective evidence that it is being followed

Internal auditing should be non-confrontational, non-adversarial and concentrate on correlating assessment results to business metrics.  It may help if it is put forward as helping co-workers to improve their processes.
